If not all this "proud to be American" is nothing else then lip service, then it is time for the Americans to put the money where their mouth is and buy American.

Hahahaha... bye, bye arrogant union chest thumping morons. They thought they were so good that the world would buy their [crap] cars no matter what crap they built but when you build the same crap for over 40 years and just re-skin it what do you expect? Gas guzzling crap boxes with more room for your McD double size this, super size that, fat arsed drivers. Funny how just about everyone they show loosing their jobs at GM are big tubs of lard walking around in jeans and t-shirts.
Let's just hope that Toyota doesn't let their head get too big now that they are top dog.

"Japan sees no major trouble as main competitor goes bankrupt."
Basically, American cars are a load of XXXX and have been a laughing stock around the world for decades. Obama must make sure that money thrown at them now is not a case of throwing good money after bad. The US car industry needs to make efficient, practical cars that can do innovative things, like actually turn corners.

Why would they bother: with GM out of the map, guess what GM buyers will buy next 10 years? Toyota, Honda, Nissan...do I see any American brand? I guess no.
GM is a victim of bad management in the very eye of the hurricane, this economic crises, the legacy of George W. Bush to the world. GM employess should sue GWB and Chenney.

American cars are craptastic. Had they actually made a competitor for the Prius, or other cars like it, maybe they could have stayed afloat. No, lets market to the Ghetto buyer, who wants a giant SUV to put spinners and gold rims on, that guzzles gas like its water... Whoever made that call should be the one paying the 5 billion in bailout.

"Had they actually made a competitor for the Prius"
I'm not sure if Toyota is making a profit on the Prius yet. Or maybe they're finally breaking even by now, I know they were selling it at a loss when they first introduced it.
This headline made me laugh. Yeah, I guess with what was the biggest car maker in the world out of the way, Japanese car makers would have no trouble with that. The Japanese parts makers who were selling parts to non-Japanese GM would take a hit, though.
But hey, GM's too big to fail, Obama and Geitner are going to take it over.

"American cars are craptastic"
That must be why they're selling like hotcakes in China.

Its just a shame they couldnt sell enough in the US. As it is what gets sold in numbers in China are cheap and cheerful rebadged Daewoos and Opels.

GM is basically 2 companies - the one that makes reasonably good brands overseas and the one that makes fuel-guzzling rust-buckets for the US market that no one else in the world would touch with a ten foot barge pole.
The same goes for Ford.
The only wonder is why the US market was happy to be fobbed off with rubbish for so long.
