I don't understand... Won't the companies be blessing the workers for each day they shut the lines down, if it ever comes down to a strike?? ... am I missing something?

Seems odd! When the auto industry is going to the wall, the unions are demanding more wages. Units sold are down hence the factory stagnant growth of late. wouldn't it make more sense to consolidate what you have now and bargain later on.

These unions are crazy. Is their purpose to keep workers in jobs, or do they want to shut down operations and be left with nothing?

Strike and shut down the lines. The companies will save a load of cash.

WOW! A wage-hike demand! Are auto union leaders in Japan totally detached from the real world. Perhaps they don't / can't read the news. You would think they would try to negotiate something along these lines: We accept 0% pay rise in exchange for job security. Must be very frustrating for company negotiators. Maybe they think if they bankrupt their own companies they will be bailed out / nationalised like in the US and keep their pay rises. Way to go. Good luck. I got pay rises last year but this year I wont be haif surprised if those are cut back.

Also the moderator can take this out of the business section and put it into the entertainment for its humorous content.

Don't get excited; they're demanding incr. ¥200/per workday. Why do they even bother?

Unions are useless (here) they won't help you buy onions even !
presto345 at 07:49 PM JST - 18th February
You'd think they would propose a pay cut in return for job security.

Wage hike...hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Well, during the "good" times, the car makers did not give a big rise either.

buddha4brains reply was perfect. :D The only way some employees could get a raise in this economy is to fire some of the others. However, in all fairness, I think the employees deserve more than they were getting in good times. Too much shareholder activism? Yaah, I think so.

The world is not interested in "pay hikes" ! What the planet really wants to know is how is Japan going to record and report the number of hours that Japanese factory workers work ! Enough of "unpaid overtime" and window dressing of various figures. The Japanese way is full of false data and manipulated figures... we are not stupid. We demand honesty and truth in reporting at Japanese run operations. I for one do not, and will not, contribute to slave labor conditions. As a consumer I want to know exactly what is happening at Japanese factories.

as I have said many times on JT, in Jpn common sense is not a strong point, this blurb really proves that!
