why should this come as a surprise? one of the outcomes of having huge surpluses for years on end is the inevitable appreciation of said country's currency.. which rightly so makes exports more expensive. There is a reason why its called the BALANCE of trade

Malfupete, balanced trade is like no taxes, everyone wants it but it's impossible.
Weighed down by energy costs eh? Who would have thought that would be the case when they are spending nearly double on oil imports to maintain energy production that would otherwise be covered by nuclear.

Yup, a "negative sign" for sure, since domestic consumption is likely to be uncertain for some time. Two decades plus since the bubble burst, and Japan is still to heavily dependent on exports.
