I am not surprised with the data. This is the time to experiment new ideas (non conservative) in Japan. Japan should stop to connect this economy shrinks with economic slowdown phobia in the United States. There are many other good excuse for this economy shrinks. Japan needs foreign investment in the domestic market. Japan needs to increase its export in BRIC’s countries. Japan should reduce its direct investment in BRIC’s countries due to high inflation and raw material cost in BRIC's countries. BRIC’s economy is a fragile economy.

Japan's economic model is still pre-industrial, making large and large-volume high price items for export. Structural changes which would have brought about a modern, information age, service oriented and wealth generating economy and society go against the money making cartels owned by the ruling classes. It's in their interests to keep the people working the way they have now for 63 years. The Japanese know there's something awry, but don't know how to fix it. Horie and Murakami tried. Look what happened to them. So, Japan remains a victim to fluctuating materials and energy prices, but with the acute challenges of an aging society, an unskilled and disinterested emerging generation who just don't see the point of pushing themselves to "karoshi" for an extra .01% growth on the economic scale, and a larger wad of notes into someone else's pocket!

"the nation's economy has entered a downturn given the economic slowdown in the United States"

I thought the States was irrelevant given China's rising star, but it seems when the U.S. sneezes, Japan still catches a cold. What's up with that?
