Kentucky Fried Chicken to be served aboard some JAL flights

TOKYO —

Japan Airlines and Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan (KFC) have collaborated on the 7th installment of the Air Series inflight meal onboard select international JAL flights, and will be serving Air Kentucky Fried Chicken onboard from Dec 1 until Feb 28, 2013.

During this period, customers traveling in Premium Economy and Economy Class on JAL from Narita to New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego (from Dec 2), London, Paris and Frankfurt, will be served KFC’s Original Recipe two-piece chicken meal during the second meal service.

The meal includes one drumstick, one boneless chicken breast fillet, a piece of complementing flat bread made especially for Air Kentucky, a cup of coleslaw and lettuce leaves.

Ooh, I can't wait. Comes with a complimentary in-flight emergency bag.

Why not call it the Samurai Christmas Dinner? That's what is really is today...

JAL slips another notch on quality.

  • 5

    Kabukilover

Finger lickin' good, no doubt. Awful as it sound, it is a cut above typical economy class food. Enjoy you grease bird folks and remember where your air sickness bags are located.

Well at least you MIGHT be able to identify what you're eating now! I've been served some very questionable meals in economy class. Why anyone would want to eat this grease-drenched swill is beyond me, especially on an airline where you have to stand in line to use the crapper.

  • 1

    spudman

Leading to even longer lines outside the toilets as KFCs well know laxative properties kick in.

  • 2

    Mirai Hayashi

Food on the plane should (and use to) reflect the delicacies and culture of the destination country. Nice to see that JAL thinks that American culture is comprised of eating greasy fatty foods that contributes to super sized obesity.

    Outta here

Crapy food on a crapy airline not much else to say really

I love the sound of "premium economy class". I don't know exactly why but it always makes me chuckle.

  • 1

    bass4funk

Usually plane food (at least in economy) is NOT that great, so instead of upping up on the quality of the on some of these airlines they want to substitute it with greasy chicken??

What's next? American Airlines will start serving Wendy's and donuts. I wouldn't be surprised. the airline industry is starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel now.

It's what economy used to be, before airlines somehow found a way to create one class lower.

    gaijinfo

Jeeze they're gonna stink up the whole cabin with that awful greasy smell...

  • 7

    DudeDeuce

Food ain't gonna make me choose an airline, price is.

  • 4

    BurakuminDes

Fair enough - they were recently bankrupt and are looking at ways to cut costs and recover - but serving dreadful fast-food is not probably the way to go.

  • 2

    Scrote

I never ask for the chicken option on a plane: too many bad experiences with fat and gristle.

  • 4

    mdepaiva

I suppose a little better than, snakes on a plane?

  • 5

Wonder if the folks in business and first class get an entire bucket of chicken instead of a couple of pieces?

  • 1

    cracaphat

Gonna stink up the plane, with everyone disembarking with a chicken stench.

  • 2

    Disillusioned

From my experience, it doesn't matter which meal you choose on an airline cos they all taste the same as the package they come in. Who remembers Flying High? "Fish or chicken?"

  • 1

    marcels

KFC plus TURBULANCE = DISASTER ...

  • 1

    alliswellinjapan

As with the cup noodles which are already served and appear to be popular I assume the "smell" factor should also play out well for KFC in maximizing demand on board. Hope it doesn't play out the other way however.

    AKBfan

Not in Business Class. Means basically not good enough? And the second para looks like it was lifted direct from a KFC promotion doc.

  • 1

    megosaa

wonder if they'll have Hot 'N Crispy on the menu? :0)

  • 2

    Farmboy

I suppose a little better than, snakes on a plane?

Kentucky Fried Snake MIGHT attract some curious customers. KFC...? Sigh. I think not. Do you remember when world-class chefs prepared the food on airlines? Time passes, I guess.

  • 1

I remember the first time I flew JAL into Japan, we ate Cup Noodle. Certainly representative of the country, but not exactly prime Japanese cuisine. It's airplane food. We've all eaten worse than KFC.

  • -1

    smithinjapan

I'd take it, but what it means is that the chicken products will have to be reheated and likely end up being soggy. I will say that I once tried some of the "Christmas chicken" after a friend brought one to a year-end potluck and it was surprisingly good.

I remember flying when planes weren't a cattle shed with wings. Roll on teleportation...

    jansob1

Soggy, tepid chicken...yay. Just what you want after coughing up the bucks to fly JAL! I can't believe how un-crunchy KFC chicken is at the restaurants, much less after sitting for hours in the food trucks on the runway.

My advice is to ALWAYS reserve the vegetarian option where it's available. I'm not vegetarian but it's usually made of fresher, simpler ingredients, and is identifiable. Usually a good salad a dessert is typically fresh fruit.

  • 5

    zichi

I read a report, the safest place on a plane is at the back near the toilets. Guess that might also apply with KFC?

  • 3

    Cos

We've all eaten worse than KFC.

I don't care. I don't even touch the food on board. BUT I don't want to fly 12 hours inside a fast-food. KFC stinks, makes the whole plane and passengers stink too.

I suppose a little better than, snakes on a plane?

When they were serving snake, I was still eating in planes. That was a real delicacy, but reserved to first class (miraculously got upgraded).

That's not chicken you're choking on--it's hate. But hey, keep choking that chicken.

How long before JAL planes have chicken wings?

  • 1

I hate the stench of KFC. Nothing sounds worse than being cooped up in a little tube surrounded by several hundred portions of KFC.

  • 1

    Korlacan Khanthavilay

Last time I flew JAL, I got soba. Not bad...not great. At least the view was nice.

  • 2

    chuichi

This will put people off flying JAL! Who would want KFC on their flight!?!?

  • 0

    Yubaru

They probably would have lost customers if they said they were putting it into business and first class!

    KariHaruka

I think I've just found my new airline provider......

  • 0

    FightingViking

I wouldn't fly JAL anyway (past experience) but if I ever did, may I order just "a cup of coleslaw" ? It's really edible !

  • 0

    tmarie

Well that means I certainly won't be flying with JAL. KFC stinks and lingers. No thank you.

  • 0

    Fadamor

Just had some KFC the other day and when you eat it "freash" it's great. However, I find it hard to believe they will be delivering it to the passenger fresh from the pressure cooker. These are going to have to be re-heated on the plane and as good as KFC is when you buy it, there is a LOT lost when it gets re-heated. If you "nuke" KFC chicken, it goes from decent chicken to grey rubber very quickly.

  • 0

    Fadamor

    "freash"? eh... "fresh"

  • 0

    Serrano

"I certainly won't be flying with JAL"

All the more KFC for us!

  • 0

    Serrano

Gotta chuckle at the people who equate KFC with grease and sickness. Enough people like it that KFC does good business and they are making money in Japan.

  • -2

    Thunderbird2

Junk food is addictive, Serrano, that's why KFC are doing good business in Japan.

  • 3

    YuriOtani

They do more business in the USA! As for JAL do not fly them so it is not an issue to me. Usually fly ANA or UAL and their food is food but that is not the point. I want to fly and be as comfortable as possible. Paying hundreds extra for a $5 meal is stupid.

How long before JAL planes have chicken wings?

I think you're on the right track. Maybe the planes could be decorated with feathers on the body and a chicken tail at the back, the oxygen masks could be in the shape of a beak, the cabin attendants could have chickenesque outfits, the carpeting could look like chicken feathers, and pilot announcements could have the chicken reel as backgroud music. Nok Air already has a themed birdlike character for their airline, and this would just take it a little further. The Chicken Plane could be pretty funny, if the pull out all the stops. It might be fun to see what Kind of omiyage catalog you could make with a chicken theme as well.

  • 0

    YuriOtani

It is not the planes that are chicken but JAL management.

  • 0

    Tom Webb

Maybe ANA could do the golden arches..?

  • 0

So now when you get off the plane, you will smell like Kentucky Fried Grease.

Imagine walking into a business meeting smelling like that?

KFC cant be a decent meal its kinda only junk snacks... composed of only brown color makes me sick, and wish green fresh vegetables.

    Leonard Carlson

If you don't like it don't fly with them, write a comment card or pack your own food for the trip.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of KFC in Japan after trying it 7-8 years ago for the first time. Seemed to be more greasy than I remember.

As stated before I buy from whatever company gives the best deal. Unless another company has a slightly higher price and choose them for the miles.
