Go on the Kirin Beer factory tour in Namamugi. It is kind of interesting and free.

Kirin Classic is the best Japanese beer. Stay away from haposhu and other low malt beers. They will give you a pylori infection in ya guts, which leads to cancer.

Somewhat strange that the citizens of the world's second biggest economy are forced to drink third-rate beer (often containing the likes of corn starch, caramel coloring and clear alcohol) because of a ludicrous system that taxes natural beer ingredients.

BTW, Kirin classic also contains cornstarch and rice liquor.

Seconded. This is what Aso should work on to bring him some popularity.

Once in a while I have some japanese guest here in my home in Switzerland. All of them use to drink beer at home and all of them say european beer is better than japanese, after they tried here some swiss, german or belgium beer. No doubt, it's true. When it comes to japanese beer, I tend to drink Suntory beer or the lovely refreshin okinawan Orion on my travels there. Asahi and Kirin is trully only middleclass...

At a party the other night they had draught Yebisu and Heartland, which were nice. They also had the usual bottled stuff with corn starch and rice, which are grim but all too often the only beer available.

Some of the local micro-brewery beers are good too. As for the "beer-like drinks", I prefer to go without than drink that filth.

Kirin's new Koku no Jikan 3rd category beer is actually not bad. Make sure it's very cold. ( like all beer! )

Shouldn't this be the real Cool Biz environmental method than goofy clothes?

Although I'm not a fan of happoshu, I still think most Japanese beer is better than American beer. Admittedly, I drank more than a few "40's" (40 ounce malt liquor) in my college days and that probably did irreparable damage to my liver, guts and brain. If you think happoshu is bad, try a Colt 45, or Mickey's or the worst one, Steel Reserve - only $1.99 for a 40oz.

My favorite, alas though it was banned - Crazy Horse.

They had to be drunk to think up beer...

popular is not necessarily best,eh? Suntory and Yebisu make the best beers.Kirin's lager is decent and so is it's stout.Asahi has a nice black beer which is hard to find, but superdry is craptacular.Malts Premium and Yebisu black are very nice indeed.. I had an interesting happoshu recently from Abashiri beer. The beer is coloured blue-green by using Spirulina and is designed to resemble the colour of the icefloes. Not a bad drop actually, although Otaru beer is much tastier.

thanks to brisk sales of its lower-priced “third-category beer” products, including Nodogoshi Nama

There is no hope left for this country.

Super dry tastes like Bud Lite to me. That is to say I don't like it at all. I like the Kirin beers fairly well, including some of the harder to find dark varieties. I find the Suntory beer to be a mixed lot, but I very much enjoy their Whiskey. (Though I do like Nikka Whiskey much better.)

I've tried some of the micro brews that are available in Japan. Most lack the finish and refinement of micro brews in the US.
