It's unfortunate that a company that helped develop digital camera technology didn't capitalize on it. It seems like such a waste considering they were sitting on a gold mine. I bet George Eastman would've never let that happen.

If Kodak is doing bad I wonder how its traditional rival Fujifilm is doing. If Fuji still has some options, they could eventually buy parts of Kodak which are relevant but seeing how traditional film businesses are declining quickly I don't think Fuji is exactly in a stellar situation as well.

This is a consequence when the business strategy is not catching up with a speed of changes in global economy with no innovation. The global market is very tough.

Companies relying on emulsion film for a majority of their business are doomed to go the way of the buggy whip. Even cinema has made the switch to digital cameras, editing, and (for the newer theaters) projecting. The days of movie clips "ending up on the cutting room floor" are pretty much over.
I'm not surprised that Kodak did not aggressively pursue digital photography. It would have meant diving into an unknown product base that would have directly competed with the products they already DID make a good profit on. It was a "roll of the dice" on their part and in this case luck was not with them.

FujiFilm is doing quiet well. While a lot of their digicams had been less than top end cameras, the recent release of the X-generation camera starting with the X100 has proven to be just the kick start they needed. The X10 has sold just as well as the X100. The new X-S1 looks to be a possible hit, and the expected X Pro-1 and upcoming X-series dSLR are expected to do as well. I think Fuji was watching Kodak die, and realized that they did not want to follow suit. there has been even talk of them buying Olympus.
