Unlikely if not Unwise venture.

AND JAPAN NEEDS MORE CONVENIENCE STORES? I think not.

Lawson and its kind are making out well as the economy nosedives, their stock value is going up when others are tanking, so it makes sense for them to increase the number of stores. Sorry JT experts.

Just what Japan doesn't need. More chemical-laced food... Ever wonder why Lawson's rice balls, obentos and breads last so long? They are riddled with additives and gunk. More rice fields taken up with these places, more unnecessary consumption of electricity lighting these places, more surly kids with automaton speech etc.
OK, OK I'm from the Christmas bah-humbug school of thought but the post ain't far from the truth either.

Lawson double veg stores, japan taking more vegetables, good.

RichardtheFirst, what makes you think they're increasing the number of stores? It says the number of stores that sell veggies is being increased. That means 1500 stores that don't sell veggies will start selling them.
nutsagain, I hope you don't think Lawson's is the only store that sells food with additives. If you are into eating food without additives you're going to have to stop using all mainstream food stores and give up restaurants altogether.

Moondog: Of course you're right, there are additives in most if not all J stores and this is due to lax Ministry of Health guidelines. So poor in fact that they're about twenty years behind other developed countries. But if you really do want to know how particularly scary Lawson's and other konbini muck is; search The Japan Times archives 'for food additive salesman' and really scare yourself. Here's a guy who made a living as a food technologist and quit due to the depth of this problem. So much so, he refused to let his own kids eat konbini stores's foods of any kind. Scary stuff...

The Ministry of Health has guidelines? For what? They have no standards or enforcement of anything when it comes to food safety and consumer health! I don't eat the garbage from these places but my wife swears its okay "because the government says it is". That's the mentality that lets them get away with the chemical-laced foods!
