Marubeni acquires Alaska salmon processing plant

Marubeni Corp, through its wholly owned subsidiary North Pacific Seafoods Inc, has reached an agreement with Yardarm Knot Inc to acquire the Red Salmon Cannery (Red Salmon) for $47 million to expand its Alaskan Seafood operation.

With the acquisition of Red Salmon, North Pacific's annual seafood production volume will be increased from 45,000 tons to 57,000 tons.

Alaska seafood, including wild salmon, has been well managed by U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service and Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Many Alaska seafood species have obtained MSC certification, which is highly rated worldwide.

Alaska supplies 50% of wild salmon worldwide. About 75% of sockeye salmon supply, which is very familiar with the Japanese consumer, is supplied from Alaska.

Japanese will be overfishing all wild salmon from Alaska just like they did for tuna. Hope US will keep eyes on Marubeni. If overfishing violaton is found, kick them out from Alaska. .
