Matsushita Electric Industrial Co makes a fresh start on Wednesday by renaming itself Panasonic Corp as the firm strives to better compete in the global market. In line with the corporate name change, the company, which marks its 90th anniversary this year, will also use Panasonic as its unified home appliances brand while scrapping the current National brand.
Also in the electronics industry, Victor Co of Japan and Kenwood Corp will integrate operations under a joint holding company Wednesday with the aim of improving the profitability of their car electronics and other businesses.

They should have done it years ago when they dropped 'National' as their main high tech electronics label. Matsushita is a name insular to Japan, they should have aggressively pushed Panasonic to create a brandname to rival sony, who have the second most recognizable brand name in the world.

I thought they did this at least a year ago.

Matsushita brands and other japan brands are manufactured globally via local parts and japan parts.
Japan brands name/Matsushita name can fall if quality of brand name is not maintained via quality local parts and quality local assembly workforce.

Then what was all that stuff I have been buying for the past 20 years marked "Panasonic"...was that made by someone else? Panasonic is a better known brand than is National here in the States.
