Matsuya to cut 'gyudon' prices

TOKYO —

The “gyudon” (beef bowl) price war is set to heat up even further this month with Matsuya’s announcement that it will cut prices to compete with Yoshinoya and Sukiya, which have already lowered their prices.

Matsuya said it will cut the price of its main beef bowl item by 40 yen to 280 yen from Jan 16.

This is good news that hits close to home. A positive sign that 2012 may not be the end of man's time time here on earth.

In all seriousness. I'l now be able to take out a girl for only 280 yen (560 yen total for two).

    Where's the beef from?

The beef is from Australia and the U.S.

I can only imagine the quality of the beef if they're selling the stuff so cheap and still turning a profit.

Serrano: "The beef is from Australia and the U.S."

Ah, that answers my question, thanks! If it's from the US that would explain the stringy, cheapness, and fattiness of it, as well as the poor taste. Aussie beef is usually pretty good by comparison, but any of these beef bowl places use low-grade beef, regardless of what nation it's from.

And do be careful, Serrano -- they sometimes cleverly make company names like, "Aussie Beef" or "100% Pure Beef" so when they tell you, "We use Aussie Beef" they aren't lying... problem is you don't know what kind of company it is! haha.

Personally, I will pass on any beef bowl. Now more than ever.

It wasn't your question, smith, it was jforce's question.

"If it's from the US that would explain ther stringiness, cheapness, and fattiness of it, as well as the poor taste"

Heck, one outta three ain't bad! ( U.S. beef is cheap, even with the ridiculous tariffs ).

If there is a Big Mac Index for the US, the Gyudon Index works well in Japan.

It works perfectly: No matter where you are in Japan, the gyudon converts into exactly the same price in yen.

    Where's the beef from?

The snout, under the fingernails, the ears. Or did you mean what country?

Hate Japanese beef. I prefer lean North American or Aussie beef. Stringy beef? Don't know where smith has been getting his American beef, maybe from the Salvation Army soup kitchen? I ate a Kobe beef burger in Kobe that turned my stomach. Went to a ryokan in Hida-Furukawa last year for Xmas. The beef there was ok, but still too fatty and greasy for my tastes.
