McDonald's Japan to sell premium burgers for first time

McDonald's Holdings Co (Japan) said Monday that it will start selling two premium versions of its Quarter Pounder hamburger for a limited period, beginning June 24.

The new Quarter Pounders, which have 150% more burger patty than regular McDonald's hamburgers, will come in two styles: The Quarter Pounder BLT, which is made with bacon, lettuce and tomato and will sell for 520-570 yen, and the Quarter Pounder Habanero Tomato, which is served with spicy habanero sauce and will be priced at 480-520 yen.

It is the first time for McDonald's Japan to sell a burger for more than 500 yen.

McDonald's Holdings Chairman and President Eiko Harada introduced the new burgers, telling reporters that they represent part of the chain's plan to alter its pricing and to boost sales this summer, Sankei Shimbun reported.

How come they squeezed in McDs and premium in the same sentence??

Mac's had to be spending a lot of cash on this ad campaign, even NHK had a section on their news last night about this "new" menu and campaign.

And yet the people who work at Mac's don't make enough money to afford buying one.

As much as I hate supporting fast food sometimes I get that craving for some preservative packed burger!

I will be going for the spicy sauce one!

Sure, these new burgers are over 500 yen, but they're also bigger. I'm guessing they will be successful.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

What the world really needs. A bigger burger from McDonald's ...end of sarcasm

It's about time Mc Donald's put tomatoe into their burgers. I just hope the bun size will match.

There are so many other better burger alternatives than Mc Chucks. Kua’aina, Awaji Burger, Freshness - they’re worthwhile visiting.

150% more burger patty with 40% more beef.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

The Quarter Pounder BLT, which is made with bacon, lettuce and tomato

you don't say...

Tomatoes on all burgers are a great idea as well as some 'healthy salads. Some different types of 100% juices as alternatives to the soft drinks would be great too. Also, they really need to come up with some nice grilled chicken.

Prefer BK. Even Wendy's.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Rip off, a double quarter pounder with 50% more beef is still cheaper

The headlines the best"McDonald's Japan to sell premium burgers for first time" So are they admitting that the burgers they sell are substandard. All this time, and all the advertising over the years to promote their standards and now to find out that the burgers are not of a premium quality. ??? So how are they going to describe the rest of the menu, when seemingly only these two particular burgers are premium burgers.??

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Premium? I was expecting to see the words "Angus beef" in that story. IMO, Hard Rock Cafe has the best burger in Japan.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

...Hard Rock Cafe?...Hard...Rock...Cafe? Maybe try a few other places....eep.

Also, McDonald's is late to the (wholly unnecessary) premium burger game.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Agree, not Hard Rock. plenty of better in the 1 square mile of Roppongi alone, let alone elsewhere in Tokyo.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

I thought the words "premium" and "McDonald's" were mutually exclusive.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Replace every McD with A&W, please!

0 ( +3 / -3 )

So, their idea of a 'premium burger' is to put more of that so-called 'meat' in a burger? How about doing away with that rubbish altogether and producing a nice fresh salad. I won't be lining up for one of these. I remember a few months ago a friend of mine brought macdolands over for dinner. He bought me a double quarter pounder. One bite was enough for me. When you talk about macdonalds and fast food together you need to include another noun, fast death food!

I bet it can't hold a candle to Burger King's Whopper.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

you can not smoke in the streets.. but you can smoke next to school kids at McDonald's... what is wrong with McDonald's corporate... McDonalds is contributing the obesity in Japan.

The Habanero tomato sounds pretty incredible actually, will definitely try it out.

Japanese food is incredible, however every now and then I just crave a grease sandwich with absurd amounts of calories, so this should serve well.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

The skool kids shouldn't be in the smoking area/room.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Onions do not belong inside the meat, unless it's a hamburger steak. A slice of fresh onion or sauteed, on TOP of the burger only. This is my only gripe about Japanese burgers. Never been to Tokyo, so I don't know. OH! god, now the thumbs down is really going to start.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

McWhat?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Greasy food is pretty good once in a while... I think I might try the BLT.

BTW, if a quarter pounder increases in size by 150%, it would no longer be a quarter pounder, no?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Micky Dees hamburgers are substandard no mater where you go. I think they are just trying to lure customers in with theses sudo-burgers. In the states I would not want to be seen in one. I don't allow my kids to eat there much, there toys are like crack for kids. Get these spoiled brats hooked and they cry till mommy brings them back. Doesn't work for my kids... I let my son watch Super Size Me. That cured him of Micky Dees. Real hamburger shops put lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions on your burger, and it looks and tastes GREAT and at least it is not as unhealthy as Micky Dees. Honestly, I would like to try that spicy burger though.

Habanero sauce??? This Mexican will be mighty happy!! Thank god almighty for spicy food!! And Mr.Ronald McDinald too!!

Any article about McDonald's anywhere always generates all kinds of criticism of McDonald's and derogatory comments about their food, Take it with a grain of salt, it is just from the usual crowd who hates nothing more than they hate success, probably because they never had any and spend their lives blaming somebody else for their failures.. There is a reason McDonald's is the most successful fast-food franchise ever; it is because they have good products at a reasonable price, and people like it. If you don't like it nobody forces you to eat there; but why spend your time trashing something just because you personally don't like it?

-2 ( +3 / -4 )

Well, at least they're admitting that their other burgers have been, to be nice, less than "premium".

Tempestuous relationship:

In November 2008, McDonald's Japan (which did not ordinarily offer the Quarter Pounder) converted two Tokyo restaurants into "Quarter Pounder" branded restaurants which only sold Quarter Pounder meals.[2] These promotional branches closed on 27 November 2008 coinciding with the re-introduction of the Quarter Pounder at regular McDonald's branches throughout the Kantō (Tokyo) region from 28 November.[3] The Quarter Pounder was launched at one McDonald's restaurant in the Kansai (Osaka) region on 23 December 2008.[4] It was later reported that 15,000 customers had visited the restaurant on the first day, generating a record 10.02 million yen in sales for a single restaurant in one day. It was however also revealed that McDonald's had hired 1,000 "extras" to queue up on the first day. McDonald's Japan explained that the hirees were used for "product monitoring purposes".[5]

Saying "premium burger from McDonalds" is a bit like saying "luxury car from Yugo."

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Sort out the bun. That's the soft point. Use your Egg McMuffin muffins.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@gogogo maybe because it's only 50% bigger, not 150% bigger?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Quarter Pounder? Shouldn't it be called "Royale?" You know, because of the metric system?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

According to a rumor I heard, the sauce on the Quarter Pounder Habanero is 20 times spicier than Tabasco!

I'll confirm this next Monday at 10:30.

"Premium burgers. Now with actual meat!"

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I rarely like the specialty burgers at McDonald's here because they always put some weird sauce that kills the whole flavor. Now the Quarter Pounder with Cheese has been my favorite at Mickey D's since I was a kid. I will try the BLT version and hopefully I don't get traumatized.

Anybody remember the McDLT from back in the days?

Who cares?

Who's got the money to buy overpriced fast food????
