MHI wins transport system order from Miami airport

TOKYO —

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd said Thursday that it has won an order to build an automated transport system at Miami International Airport jointly with two U.S. companies. Mitsubishi Heavy received the contract, worth $260 million, in cooperation with major Japanese trader Sumitomo Corp. The automated people mover system is slated to be completed in September 2011.

The 1.25-mile-long APM system will connect the airport’s terminal buildings with car rental and other nearby facilities. This is the second APM order Mitsubishi Heavy has received from the Miami airport following the first one in 1999.

It hopes to receive an additional order from the airport for APM operations and maintenance for a period of up to 15 years.

Mitsubishi Heavy previously won similar APM orders from Washington’s Dulles International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and airports in Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Dubai.
