With further automation there will be a corresponding growth in the size of the unnecessariat and precariat classes. Tough times ahead for those without the skills the markets need.

Throughout history the military has provided employment for those in the armies of the under-employed and unemployed. Now that Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems are becoming more commonplace, however, there will be even fewer jobs for the everyday soldier type.

And then there's the technological singularity to look forward to.

Soma and the feelies won't make things right in this brave, new world.

This is why education is important. People have to get with the times. I would never support halting the advancement of technology for the sake of keeping the low-wage slave labor. Instead, you put people in schools, especially in the fields of STEM.

Not just simple manual labor but some highly sophisticated but repetitive tasks as well like driving, doctors, lawyers, etc. where AI and deep learning can replace these diagnostic related jobs.

What kind of skills or degree one's need?

IoT, get back to the countryside, simple life, spirituality, etc. Not everyone's made for higher education. Build consciousness of surroundings, conscience, etc. Society needs a new paradigm, an alternative to the rat race & focus on inner quality.

Thepbot,

That's all fine & well but the future is going to put MANY more than just factory workers on the street so to speak, unless we figure a way to allow people to have meaningful lives there is going to absolute hell to pay if this ""future"" leads to MASSIVE unemployment & further increased have & have nots.

IMO this is all headed in a VERY scary direction, the whole way of life(even as of today) way way beyond sustainable, we are already on a crash course, I fear technology is really going to speed this process that's already taking place, the human race is on a train headed towards a cliff!!

What they will eventually learn is how Americans and Japanese feel like now with no jobs.

Robots don't pay taxes so excessive automation will only kill our present regimes-most governments won't want to accept that .....
