Do you have to be the first owner of the car to get the payout?
Disillusioned
Yeah, they knew they could away with it in Japan and, when caught, they would only need an opology and to throw a bit of cash at the problem. If they had been caught doing it in other countries it would have resulted in criminal procedings. If course, the company will pay for it through decreased domestic sales, but that is not the same as going to prison, is it?

S Bags. I am appalled at this and the dishonesty overall. How dare all the workers accept this from top down. What is wrong with this culture????

I wonder if I'll be able to get some money from Daihatsu. The brochure said that my Move (which is a really nice car, by the way) would get 29 kilometres to the litre.
"Really?" I said to the salesman.
"Well. You might get that if you're lucky," he replied.
"Downhill with a good wind behind it?"
"Not quite as bad as that, but running around the test track, while it's still brand new and with fresh oil in it."
A couple of years ago when I bought it, it was doing about 17. Now it's between 12 and 13.

So you have to be "chanto nihonjin" to receive a refund because of their dishonesty?

Despite having no recall of ordering fudged data, he'll no doubt write a book of his memoirs and rake in some bucks.
