Nikon to cut 1,000 jobs

TOKYO —

Camera and precision equipment maker Nikon Corp said Tuesday that it would cut about 1,000 jobs, mostly at its domestic plants, as it braces for a loss this year. Nikon said it would overhaul its operations making devices for use in the production of semiconductors. It will also downsize its subsidiary in Singapore and transfer part of the business to Taiwan.

The group aims to reduce its annual costs by about 8 billion yen. Nikon has been hit by weak demand. Earlier this month it forecast a net loss of 17 billion yen for the current business year to March.

Hmmmm, I wonder if getting FAR TOO GREEDY with the D3X selling price had anything to do with it? I'm sure it didn't but then again how could they be suffering with all the gear I've recently purchased? :P

One thing to note for Nikon is to stop making crappy plastic Thailand lenses. When your first time entry level buyers end up with problem lenses then what are they to think? I know I have had to defend those arguements with "you get what you pay for" althought not everyone wants to pay for pro-glass like me which IS made in Japan.

Good point about the lenses. I have a friend who works for Canon (not in their camera business) who reckons that Nikon is seriously on the nail regarding the lens issue. He reckons quality is one issue, while another is the fact that they seem to have mis-allocated resources and cannot keep up with demand in the higher price brackets. This same friend also reckons that Nikon is very much on the defensive at the current time in its external battle with Canon. Everytime Nikon brings out a product to counter a Canon camera, Canon manage to bring out the next generation to recapture the advantage.

This is sad news.Things just seem to be going from bad to worse.Wonder when normalcy will return. Incidentally there is an interesting website that is specifically dedicated to recession victims. It offers help and discusses all issues related to recession- http://www.angstcorner.com. It’s worth a visit!
