Indirectly Ghosn is saying that only low budget cars (say between JY150,000 to Y300,000) will be selling well globally (not only in China and India).

Introducing them and selling enmasse would upset the oil industry, and they need time to adjust. Hence, the slow introduction.

While I am in favour of the concept of electric cars in relation to the environment (we all know just how bad and harmful the air around major roads can be), if the electricity that powers these cars come from coal-fired powerplants or other dirty electricity generation, then they just move the pollution from the streets to the powerplants, thus achieving no real benefit.

It sounds like conspiracy - - 'Big Oil' won't let the poor car makers sell us cars which will 'save the planet.'

donkusai, true for the most part, but I would amend your statement thusly:

then they just move the pollution from the streets to the powerplants

where the pollution can more efficiently be controlled/eliminated/reduced/taxed thus achieving a real benefit.

Also, most of the electricity in Japan and France will come from nuclear power plants. (Good or bad? Let science decide.)

Ghosn seems to be a guy who knows what he is doing and what he is talking about. Probably this statement is a case of "under-promising and over-delivering", which is what a competent company boss (as opposed to the huckster con-man type) tries to do.
