They can talk all they want. As long as they don´t solve the problem of producing batteries that are strong enough to store as much power as tank of gas, and at a reasonable cost, this is a pie in the sky. Rather than chasing this phantom, people could just buy smaller vehicles, if the gas price really hurts them. How much would 1000/liter really hurt you, if you drive a K-car? And the K-car gets you from point A to B just as well as the urban battle tanks that people buy these days.

Oil reserves are limited, and demand is increasing. It does not take an Einstein to figure out that the cost of the black stuff has only have one way to go.

It isnt so much the price of gas thats forcing the change as the politics surrounding the state of the air we breath. Hybrid cars are no less polluting than a good diesel car, more so in most cases. Nissan has access to Renault's fine diesel engines so doesnt need to go down that route.
Rechargeable and hydrogen powered electric cars are the way forward now that lithium-ion batteries (amongst others) show great promise. The main issues at hand though are how to produce hydrogen economically and without creating even more pollution, hydrogen and recharging infrastructure and recyclability. Got a little ways to go yet.
