11million LOL how pathetic, he should get 8 years salary and extra compensation, its doubtful anybody will employ him in Japan at his previous level and wages. why would anybody want to be a whistleblower when they can expect similiar court proceedings and loss of income credibility. Sorry Japan has a long long way to go yet

Again, mindless bullying overrides morality in Japanese work culture. I will never buy an Olympus product.

I commend Hamada-san for fighting so long and hard for what is right. I hope an intelligent company sees the benefits in employing a man of such conviction.

Well, actually it shows the limitations of whistleblower protection. You can stick all the laws and judgments in the world, but there is no way a company will wholeheartedly guarantee your position and opportunity after you sold them out (even if it is entirely their own fault) and even other companies will be wary of hiring you. There are plenty of other fully qualified candidates that haven't already demonstrated a propensity to betray the company (even for the right reasons).

Perhaps instead of writing laws and judgments trying to enforce the impossible, a more realistic tack would be to recognize that being a whistleblower means the end of your career. In case of an acknowledged whistleblower, the company is limited to firing him, then paying out his regular wage until he's 65, then giving him the pension. If he can outdo that on his own, kudos for him, but the reward for having the moral courage to speak up is to, if he so wishes, never have to work again.

If Olympus refused to comply with a supreme court ruling the president of Olympus should have been arrested and jailed for contempt of court until the company did as it was told. Allowing Olympus to flout the ruling for several years only adds to the impression of uselessness that the supreme court exudes.

Arghghgh, its no that Japan is going down the pan when such a guy with lashings of integrity get so royally shafted. This is the kind of man who should be running large companies or even the country. Pride vs integrity i choose integrity everyday and twice on sunday.
