The program requires the scrapping of your eligible trade-in vehicle, and that the dealer disclose to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in. The scrap value, however minimal, will be in addition to the rebate, and not in place of the rebate.

The Prius continues to be a huge success in spite of the bashing some are fond of doing, claiming it does more harm to the environment than good. On the roads it is now pretty ubiquitous. It is really noticeable and on my daily driving trips I count more of them than any other model. Good for Toyota!

As far as the point of doing MORE harm than good, I cannot say, but I DO know that the people who should be buying them are not the people with reasonable vehicles that already use little fuel. The BEST bang for the buck is for people to switch from an old inefficient vehicle to a hybrid.

In my case, I have a non hybrid vehicle that is paid for and gets great gas mileage. I could easily afford to buy a hybrid, but why? The fuel savings would be probably 5000 yen per month, which is much much less than the payments would be. Too bad. Buying a new vehicle would NOT be the most environmentally conscious move I could make.

This small marginal return situation crops up all through my life. I use too little energy already to make cutting consumption worth my while. I have already taken so many countermeasures that the marginal benefit of energy saving technologies have become miniscule. For this reason, I hope that others consider adopting these technologies.

Whatever my situation, hats off to Toyota. They made the appropriate sacrifices and have produced an excellent vehicle for common people.. a true volkswagen.
