Perhaps the buyer got confused when he heard that a pair of juicy mellons was up for grabs.

The seafood guy, from beforehand, has probably some debt/relation with-whether it be money or personal. He can be generous, and wants to be generous, considering Yubari's predicaments. Fair enough, good on him. The problem is, what the acquired monies then go towards. Do they use it to just pay off some bills, or do they take the incentive to invest some more, and try and create something, something that would better Yubari overall? Cause paying the bills, still wont clear the debt, and actually change their situation. That seems to me to be where the problems lie. It seems to happen often, and not only in Japan.

Cause i reckon the only people that consider it a topic of conversation, would be foreigners.

would he pay the same amount for a melon harvested outside Japan? Why don-t the government subsidize melons instead of rice?

people will always try to find a way to blame the melons - when they are really just innocent bystanders in this charade of commercialism. You really shouldn't blame the melons.

Here's another old business saying ( the used car salesman in True Lies said this ): One born every minute.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.
