Popular curry restaurant runs out of stock due to quake shortages
TOKYO —
Popular curry restaurant Coco Ichibanya has temporarily stopped offering their beef curry and hashed beef menu items.
Due to the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami disaster, the company’s Tochigi plant, where the curry sauce for many of the restaurant’s dishes is manufactured, had to shut down for about a week, leading to a shortage, the company said. Currently, the company has been serving what it has in back stock.
The plant resumed operation on March 17, but only for sauce used with pork dishes. The company hopes to begin serving the beef dishes again next week, but warns it may be late April before all menu items are fully stocked again.

Had the pork platter last evening in Hachinohe. Did notice that the beef menu items were crossed out. Now I know why.

Curry sauce ran out!!! Exactly manufatured awful muck made with cheap products.Went once never again. That is not curry by any stretch of the imagination. There stuff is probably more unhealthy than McDonalds.

Agree with stevecpfc.
Here to the west of Tokyo, shelfs are full again(and been like that for some time now) so we can get everything again.
Yes, many factories shut down after the quake and are now struggling to catch up while at the same time trying to conserve energy.
Starting a factory up(or shutting it down fully) can take up to 3-4 days, so some shortages are the norm.

My favourite Japanese curry powder was the "Red Indian" brand that came in a jar, complete with a picture of an Indian of the North American variety in a full feather headdress.

Yes, my Indian friends get angry at me when I tell them, sorry, but I prefer COCO ICIBAN, yummy! Yummy! Go for that nice simple vegetables and sausages, maybe with the spice level around 4 you will be genki! Genki!

Lots of things missing in Kanagawa, including Lipton Tea as mentioned above. I love that lemon tea with my shouchu. I will look up Lipton Japan.

I like Coco-Ichiban as I do like the Matsuya original curry.
Are those authentic Indian curries as I had and love from my indian, etc friends and co-workers = no way. Just no comparison and there shouldn't be one.
I have been traveling the globe and tasted various cuisines in many countries(much of what was proclaimed to be authentic).
But all was good and tasty just local flavour variants.
Hope Coco-Ichiban get soon back on track as many people like their curry. And I doubt that any of their visitors would expect authentic Indian curry for the price, etc.
Said that I have Indian friends who also often eat there.

I won't be losing sleep over the lack of J-Curry. Don't mind it now and again, but I prefer my curry not to taste bland - give me an Indian or Thai curry instead.
