TOKYO —
Sapporo Breweries Ltd Thursday started brewing the world’s first “space beer” from a descendant of barley whose seeds were stored aboard the International Space Station for five months two years ago. By early November, the company expects to make 100 liters of the beer at its plant in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo, from 20 kilograms of malted barley.
The unit of Sapporo Holdings Ltd plans to compare the products with beer made of regular barley in terms of taste and components.
Since 2006, Sapporo has worked with Manabu Sugimoto, associate professor at Okayama University, in studying how barley is affected by space.
The company harvested 45 kilograms of the “space” barley in May this year.
