Seiren orders new employees to stand by at home

FUKUI —

Seiren Co, a Fukui-based major textile manufacturer, has ordered 72 of its 101 newly recruited employees to stand by at home until mid-September due to decline in its businesses, company officials said Friday. The 72 recruits include 59 hired at the headquarters of the major car seat maker, and 13 at its Osaka affiliate, according to the officials.

‘‘We have no choice but to furlough them as our businesses have been hit by decreases in orders,’’ said Toru Kawabata, general affairs chief. ‘‘We will definitely ask all of the 72 to work from September.’’ While standing by, the new workers will receive 60% of their monthly salary and will be required to attend training sessions twice a month. The remaining 29 new employees will be assigned to work on manufacturing floors.

Sixty percent of their pay for 2 days a month?

If my employer offered me that, I'd think I'd won the lotto.

60% of your pay is the minimum allowed by law. it's good if you can get by on 60% but not good if you were counting on 100%. it's not great for your career development either.

yeah, but you can work the other 22 days a month. In the same situation I would offer full time to 50% of the candidates and tell the other 50% they will be the first to be hired in September should they choose to do so.

A training session could be a week long...nobody said it was one day.

Doesn't make much sense. I would have them work 60% and pay them 60%. They could have the factory in the best condition they have ever seen.
