TOKYO —
Shikishima Baking Co, Japan’s second largest bread producer, said Friday that it will raise prices in May on 210 of its key 530 bread products. Following a price hike in December, the company will increase recommended retail prices by 7-11% for shipment starting May 16.
For another 140 items, Shikishima will leave prices unchanged but reduce the number of contents. The decision came as the government raised the prices of imported wheat sold to the private sector by 30% Tuesday.
The top Japanese producer, Yamazaki Baking Co, announced price hikes earlier this week and third-ranking Fuji Baking Group Co is considering following suit.

We shouldn't complain. Japan does indeed produce some of the best bread in the world. And when it comes to cake? Ah yes, - Castella!

Best bread in the world? No way, I can almost taste teh additives in Japanese bread. Japan doesnt grow much wheat, and not well either I imagine. There simply isnt enough free land available for that sort of farming, especially as most is taken up with rice cultivation. Raising prices on a product harder to obtain at home seems odd, it might help a minority group of farmers, but it harms consumers to a larger degree. I miss the bread back home, going from whole aisle in the supermarket of all sortsof beautiful bread varieties to a couple of shelves of overpriced loaves. Cant even buy a decent toaster here, which is strange since so many are manufactured here(albeit for export).

sarcasm123, Since this is a report about bread and people have opinions about bread, it makes sense that some might want to complain about that which is called bread in Japan. Ever been to France? I doubt if anyone came to Japan to complain about bread, although I'm sure some came to JapanToday to complain. Personally, I like bread made by the local baker, not the national conglomerate, especially when the local baker makes great French bread sans additives.

If you have an oven you can always bake your own bread. Bread tastes best when it is still warm right out of the oven.

saracasm123 u tool, yes thats why I came to Japan...to complain about bread. Borscht has it right, this happens to be an articlae about bread.Imagine coming aaaaaall the way to Japan just to pretend your not a foreigner and dissing all the other Gaijin. You must be extra special.
Back to bread... I havnt found any bakeries in my neck of the woods as it is a bit inaka, so there are slim pickings. I cant help it if I like bread, and miss the stuff back home.I like Japanese food too, but obviously a taste of home is always nice. I remember alot of Japanese friends back in my home country complaining about the japanese restaurants and quality of rice there. Get a clue sarcasm. JT may have changed its look but you obviously haven't lost your superiority complex.
