Canon's business is diversified enough that losing point-and-shoot camera revenues won't hurt too much. Nikon never had as big a share of the p&s business as Canon, but it's still a chunk of their revenues lost, which could be harder on them - Nikon is still all about cameras and optics (rangefinders, gun sights, microscopes).

The sad thing is that Canon's $100-$150 PnS cameras still surpass anything made by the cell-phone makers. The camera you have is the camera used for most of the world. Too bad.
I was looking for a new Canon just a few weeks ago and found that my current camera was still available, but for almost double the price. Cell phones really have killed the sub-$500 market.
At least they are profitable.
Had to deal with a new Canon printer at Mom's place. No drivers for her OS were available, so we gave it to relative and I bought her a Brother laser printer.

No, the "sad thing" is that the trend towards camera-phones has been happening for well over a decade, but Canon did not manage to diversify their business when they had opportunities to do so. And, the other "sad thing" is that another J-company is blaming "a slowdown in China" for poor results.
