Money-losing Sony will spin off its video-and-sound business into a separate company and shrink its headquarters as part of a three-year turnaround plan to speed up decision-making and become profitable again.

So after several years of bleeding money, they have finally decided to get "lean and mean". And who says Japanese management simply does not get it?

This may be the last chance. Nevertheless, as long as it is under one umbrella management, I am still not convinced that this will work. Good luck.

Am using lots of Sony products in my home. I find their products superior to others. Just hope the company can regain its footing and return to making more excellent products.

And yet another Sony recovery plan.... To me... the next step with consumer technology is to add as many censors to handheld devices as possible. I still have not encountered a phone that can measure the size of anything by using the camera and other software. In addition... what about object recognition.... wouldn't it be great to point your camera at something and find out what it is and get additional information. I'm not talking about pointing it at a bar code. Health related censors too. Japan is great at this kind of stuff.... other companies must be working on it... it is the next step in handheld technology.

Hope it is not acquired by Samsung before recovery plan.

Intel is working on it:

Google Goggles and the like can try:

Health related censors too.

The new MS Health Band crams a lot of sensors:

Nothing wrong with a company that is trying to change its business. Samsung is already losing competitiveness in smartphones against new Chinese competitors, and Apple is getting its leading role again (this is a bit weird). Things change fast in the global market, and Sony is doing the best thing choosing keeping her focus only on the profitable sectors. In the near future all the main companies in electronics will be Chinese. It's pretty predictable. The old companies that were leaders in this market (mainly Japanese and German) and the currently successful Korean ones will have to remodel themselves completely.

Software that supports the console should be their sole focus for the time being. They need to invest big into buying or creating hit software when the competition is still few & behind. Afterall people buy the console because it involves a certain "technique" mindset as compared to playing on tablet.
