Sony's Morita idea was to come out with products with the latest most developed technology by always being the first in the market. Morita's motto was "we cannot allow the consumers decide by themselves what to buy"
It worked well until the economy was healthy and people had money to by the newest gadgets. Now, the economy is shabby, people have more important things to spend money on and Sony needed to readjust their business policy and produce fragile garbage with the latest technology to make sure they break down in no time forcing end users to buy the next one. They did it so well that Sony's overall quality is a big piece of garbage now in elegant design and wrapping, they are made at the cheapest and worst places of the world for nickels. Sony's execs are not the old proud staff but career and money seeking greedy bastard. What sense does it make to buy Sony? It's not so long ago millions of batteries were recalled for overheating and Sony Vaio laptops are used all over the world for heating apartments in cold winter days.

Sony products do seem to be of rather poor quality these days. I wonder if Apple products will start to see a similar trend now that Jobs is gone. Will we see robust, metal computers replaced by flimsy plastic ones? Time will tell.

Scrote - the KDL 40X series are very high grade TVs, produced until 3 years ago (probably the best ever produced by Sony). I too have the feeling that the quality decreased since...

Sony downgraded Bravia's quality a few years ago on purpose to make its price more affordable instead of opting for a lesser profit they reap on it and keeping the quality high.
