Sony to begin phased global launch of 4K LCD TVs

Sony Corp will begin the phased launch of its latest BRAVIA LCD television in all global regions from the end of the year.

The new BRAVIA boasts a 4K (3840 x 2160) LCD panel, in the industry's largest 84-inch class and incorporates Sony's “4K X-Reality PRO” super-resolution high picture quality engine. Saony said the combination seamlessly delivers high-resolution large-screen picture with high-quality powerful sound to provide viewers with immersive experiences, unlike anything offered by existing televisions.

This new 4K TV comes equipped with a 4K LCD panel comprising approximately 8.29 megapixels, which is 4 times the resolution of Full HD standard, and incorporates “4K X-Reality PRO”, Sony's super-resolution high picture quality engine optimized for 4K TV. This engine is capable of reproducing a variety of content with different resolutions, such as HD digital broadcasts or Blu-ray discs content, into stunningly crisp, high-quality images with 4K resolution.

Viewers will not be bothered by the pixels and notice images are breathtakingly realistic and beautifully clear with the wide 60-degree viewing angle, even if they sit as much as half the distance to the screen, as compared to when viewing Full HD (for which distance equal to 3 times the screen height is recommended).

In addition, the combination of “10 Unit Live Speaker” side speaker system, which is optimized for this large-size screen, with Sony's unique high-quality sound signal-processing technology achieves powerful three-dimensional sound that envelops the viewer in position-orienting tones, from deep bass to high notes.

Do some math.... this is more of a gimmick using a larger screen only. The pixels per inch (PPI) number has barely been increased so the actual clarity of the images will not discernably be different. A 42 inch diagonal screen is approximately 38 inches from left to right.... divided by 1980... number of lines and you get 52 lines per inch. Now take 3840 lines and divide that by roughtly 78 inches.... 49 lines per inch. Actually less resolution than the 42 inch screen.

you got it wrong

Hiniku - you got it VERY wrong. You can't compare full HD to 4K when the screens are different sizes. You can only compare same screen sizes. Not a gimmick at all. 4K = four times full HD is correct.

Sony lost in global economic war.

The management team of Sony does not care. They raped company and now retired on company pension. LA,LA,LA. They are laughing to the bank.

I got it right... lines per inch is correct.. and screen resolution is correct... do your math and tell me differently. If you stand 10 feet from a 42 inch screen and 10 feet from an 84 inch screen... you will see the exact same resolution.

Thank you very much SONY for slowly bringing in to the masses this extremely-HIGH-Technology (yet with astronomically high tag price) products.

Once you incorporate the 4K tehnology to Bravia Series, 4K Camera will also become cheaper.

4K Technology products are primarily used in TV studio and in super rich personal studio. This segement (4K equipped products) are still dominated by ASTRODESIGN Corporation of Japan.... in which underwater camera-taken videos and projected/displayed in 4k TV is beyond compare. Sharp, Samsung, LG etc who do not use 4K yet cannot match the quality of these ASTRODESIGN Corp 4K products.

I'll wait for the 8K models.

ASTRODESIGN Corp already have 8K models.

I am really waiting for the Japanese companies to become forefront in Technology again. Sharp, SONY and Panasonic should mass produce 4K and 8K Technologies.

In OLED technology, Samsung is about 6 to 12 months ahead of Japanese companies.

I want Japanese companies to regain and defeat Korean companies. Korean products are rip-off products. They have a lot of economic spies here in Japan since 1970's.

Although LG and Samsung (and some unknown Chinese TV brands) are flooding the Japanese market, I bought 3 TV sets all made in Japan by Sharp.

I will do the same with this SONY 4K TV, I will replace my TV in 3-4 years once 4K TV becomes cheaper

Wow, we have a conspiracy theorist.

Have fun getting ripped off by Japanese companies. This is why the Japanese companies are laughing all the way to the bank (well, they would be if they weren't so much in debt), Japanese people still continue to buy their stuff no matter how expensive or what crap they churn out.

I buy Japanese because I know it'll work properly and, in the rare event that there's a problem it'll be fixed promptly and without fuss. Still can't beat Sony.

As I said earlier.... all Sony has done is doubled the width of the screen.... the number of horizontial lines per inch does not change one bit... the real technology is the 4K algo... and that is no big deal too.

Now we live in Melbourne, Australia. Some of appliances marketing by LG or Samsung are base on 15 - 20 years old Japanese Technology which Japanese Company never sold them to outside Japan. Some of products which Japanese Company is marketing in here are 2 to 3 years late than domestic sale. They should sale in overseas as same time in Japan instead of wasting times. During that time, Korea Companies are selling same products all over the world. Consumers are thinking Oh! Japanese Company copy Korea product. Tortoise decision and fail marketing strategy is hurting Japanese products selling in overseas market. Also reliability of SONY product quality is dropping dramatically due to produce in Country like China and less of new creating in SONY Company. So I'm no longer loyal customer of SONY electronic products but we still only buy Japanese products which made in Japan.

Sony and Toshiba are currently displaying their new TVs at the IFA trade show in Berlin. South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc. is also expected to introduce a 4K TV in North America and elsewhere in September.

Sony said its 4K TV will be priced at around 25,000 euros (2.5 million yen, or $31,000) in Europe, while Toshiba has yet to announce a price for its massive 84-incher.

Both said their 4K TVs are capable of processing current HD images of digital broadcasting and Blu-ray Discs into higher resolution images.

The world’s first 4K TV was released by Toshiba in December. Measuring 55 inches, it is priced at around 700,000 yen, more than three times that of a conventional TV of the same size. Toshiba said the product has sold about 1,000 units a month.

Images on current HD TVs can appear grainy when viewed at a distance shorter than three times the height of the screen. But 4K TVs can halve that distance, enabling people to sit in front of an 84-inch TV at a distance of 1.5 meters.

Nippon Hoso Kyokai or Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) said it is developing technology to broadcast 8K images carrying four times the data of 4K. NHK plans to start test broadcasting 8K images in 2020.

This is a good movement that SONY has just started promoting 4k TVs in the market. However, for me, it's unclear if they've performed a survey to make TVs which capture a market requirement, demand and etc. Otherwise, it may easily come down to a pricing at the end of the day.
