Not much will change, Hirai was head of Sony Entertainment in America. Sony need to get back to doing what they did best.

He is 69 years old, took all the money he could and did nothing special, it makes no sense for him to stay any longer. Ibuka and Morita put their own money and their own lives into SONY, it meant a lot for them, the next generation of execs from Ohga on, just jumped on the stepwagon.
He was employed by SONY in hope he wouldn't come empty handed, brings his personal contacts, acquaintanceship and influence to successfully establish some advantageous business relations for SONY . Time out, Stringer can go home. Both, SONY and Stringer were rubbing their hands by hoping for some lucrative advantageous new business, they tried to milk one another. That's all, can come the magician with his wand.
It will go on forever until they empty SONY's b ank account to zero. And then the bankruptcy procedure to get out the rest and game is over.

Hirai seems to be not a bad choice at the moment. Howard Stringer's background is a CBS reporter. How he became CEO of a company which relies heavily on technology is beyond me. This move to give him the boot should have happened a long time ago.

Stepped down? And he didn't even find them cooking their books!

Sony appears to have largely given up on innovation, which is what made the company great all the way through the '80s. If they try to survive on "me too" products, they're done for.

Sony was declining a lot before stringer also, because they focused purely on their propriety Atrac music format during the 90s and 2000s only in 2003 or so they accepted Mp3 and other formats to their phones and walkman devices..
