Staples brand products launch in Japan
FRAMINGHAM, Mass —
Staples Inc, the world’s largest office products company and second largest Internet retailer, on Thursday announced the launch of Staples brand products in Japan.
Staples has established a wholesale distribution relationship with Jointex, a leading office products wholesaler and division of PLUS Corporation, a manufacturer of stationery and office furniture based in Tokyo. A wide range of Staples brand products, including technology accessories, writing instruments and supplies such as notebooks and binder clips with unique designs are now available to small business customers in Japan via delivery and retail stores.
“As the most trusted brand in office products in North America, our goal at Staples is to help small businesses succeed by providing innovative, quality products,” said Dave D’Angelo, senior vice president of Staples Brand Group. “We’re excited to introduce Staples brand products to Japan, providing businesses there with the quality and value that customers around the world trust every day.”
Staples brand products will now be available in Japan through hundreds of dealers as well as more than 25 retail stores. Products include filing products, fasteners, notebooks, writing instruments and other business essentials. Staples plans to expand the number of products and categories over time.

Good for them, I guess. I don't believe it is a good idea for foreign brands to join forces with a Japanese one like this. The reason is Japanese companies sooner or later want to bring more "Japaneseness" into the business. Sure, it might seem like a good idea and opportunity to be able to sell your stuff everywhere, right from the start, but I believe the brand is de-valued. You can create a different brand awarness if you are calling all the shots. With a partner firm, knowing how "things work in Japan", you are inevitably taking a few steps back and putting all the possible bold ideas on hold.
