Supermarket chains slash vegetable prices for 3 days
TOKYO —
Two supermarket chains on Friday started a three-day campaign to dramatically slash vegetable prices in an attempt to coax buyers back following recent price increases.
Aeon, Japan’s largest retail group, and Ito-Yokado, owned by Seven & I Holdings Co, said they are reducing the price of vegetables until Monday.
The move comes in response to recent price increases in farm produce, brought about by crop failures following Japan’s recent climatic cold snap. In response to the resultant sales slumps, Aeon announced that it will reduce the price of vegetables by up to 60% at 420 of its stores nationwide for the three-day campaign.

And yet they'll still make money, meaning the stuff's overpriced to begin with. They should PERMANENTLY lower prices across the board. Doing this will only win customers back for three days.

Excellent. Time to go buy. I did not realize that prices went up.

I agree that several supermarket chains are more expensive than others, but I always felt that Ito-Yokado is reasonably cheaper than Aeon or the other large supermarkets.
I just hope they're not trying to mix in irridiated veggies in the stockpile.

Try "ave" food stores for good quality and dirt cheap.

I guess in 3 days the supply of vegetables from Fukushima-ken runs out.

Shop at AEONs on Wednesday as they are on sale. I have been shocked at the price of things - no nabe for us with hakusai and the like selling for 250 for half! FAAAAAAAR too expensive. I went to JA instead and low andd behold, they were MORE expensive. TPP indeed!!

So far vegetables and fruits are concerned Ito-yokado is expensive whereas aeon needs to develop this business line (small and half empty shelves). Anyway no reason not to welcome their move. Wish discount is applied to fruits as well :)

I shop at my local Gourmet City, open 24/7 and prices are decent.
Plus, their in-store made bentos, fries, etc are excellent. Recently got 15 Sticks of Yakitori for 200Yen(50% off) or a Los-Katsu for 98Yen(Miso-katsu day). Thursdays is their discount day(most stores got one) and the prices do drop a lot but gets crowded as hell too.

Typical, I done my weekly shopping yesterday. I was not happy about paying 398 for a lettuce...

Local yaoya is 30 to 50% cheaper than the supermarkets. I don't know why anyone would buy veg at the super.

Cheap marketing tricks always work in Japan. Why don't they extend it to unlimited days? Everything is too expensive in Japan.

@smithinjapan
where do you get your ideas from? ito yokado and aeon set their F&V (fruit and veggie) prices according to how much farmers and co-ops are charging them. profit margins on F&Vs are razor thin to begin with.
and all you TPP supporters, do you really prefer to have your food shipped thousands of kilometers away? no thank you! i would prefer to pay a bit more for locally grown food.

They put the price down on veggies,but offset it with sly price increases on other necessities.An old trick.

@rickyvee
Actually, if you would look closer at most fruits sold in supermarkets, you will find that these are shipped from far away countries.
Bananas and pineapples from the Philippines, avocados from Mexico and many other countries. Meat is likewise imported from the USA, Australia, New Zealand.

So how do neighborhood yaoyas sell them for so much less?
And in many cases, the overall carbon efficiency is higher for produce shipped from far away. Bananas from the Phillipines vs. hothouse Hokkaido strawberries? Not always clear cut which is more efficient. Although in this particular example I'm comparing apples and oranges.

Went to Aeon Jusco after work but could not see any change in prices....they had boxes of onions and potatoes selling them for 19 yen each which is indeed 50% lower than what I paid a week ago but anything else just the same as last weekend. Could you verify this 7news' Moderator?

@elvensilvan
you're looking at only non-seasonal fruit. but, that's the whole point. do people really want more F&V shipped from abroad? on your point about meat, i would have to disagree. there's more local meat that foreign meat sold in japan.
@nessie uhhh...because yaoyas have a much lower overhead than massive supermarkets. also, you're only looking at carbon efficiency. my argument is more about eating locally/domestically which benefits the area where you live. eating imported food from comglomerates just isn't as appeasing.

@tokyokawasaki, $5 for a head of lettuce? It is only $1.49 here in winter time. I pay $0.99 for it in summer.

Indeed the prices did go up over the holidays. i went away with being able to get lettuce for 1.29 and came back to it being nearly 300 yen. No lettuce for us needless to say!
