TOKYO —
Japan’s supermarket sales rose 1.9% in February from the previous year on a same-store-basis, up for the first time in 26 months, largely because of one extra business day due to the leap year, an industry body said Monday.
Sales at 8,656 outlets operated by 78 companies totaled 1,000.89 billion yen, before adjustments for the change in the number of stores were made, according to the Japan Chain Stores Association.

This week at Jusco I was disappointed. Before, a package with 10 slices of cheese was 168 Yen. Now, it was 178 Yen, well this is an increase of 6%, which might be reasonable. However the number of slices has decreased to 8. (so the weight is down from 180 to 144 gram) In total an increase of 32% if one calculated per slice of cheese. What a ripp-off. No wonder that people hesitate to buy.
