TOKYO —
TDK Corp will dismiss by the end of March about 1,020 temporary workers at its domestic plants, 700 of them working in the Tohoku region northeast Japan, company officials said Thursday. TDK is resorting to a hefty personnel cut now that its plants are operating below 60% of their capacities due to falling demand for its electronics parts for car- and personal computer-use amid the worldwide economic downturn, the officials added.
As of the end of November, the company employed about 1,200 temporary workers around Japan so the announced measure will eliminate more than 80% of them. Slated for dismissal in the Tohoku region are about 700 workers including those in Yamagata and Iwate prefectures. This is on top of 320 workers, nearly all temporary, who are being cut at 15 plants operated by the company and its subsidiaries in Akita Prefecture.

Oh great. The only reason these leeches set up shop in Tohoku is because they can pay rock bottom wages to the people there - as it is a very undeveloped part of Japan. Times a little tough? Can't cause waves in the 'developed' parts of Japan - so throw those Tohokans out of work!
Spineless politicians wonder why the countryside is being depopulated...
