$3.50 an hour for an average 5 day 8 hour work week? Wow! And the price of a new Corolla in SA is $7,000 more than in the US.
Doesn't look like things have changed that much in the old apartheid state. I could be very wrong though.

Nissan too. Fizz, i agree that the wage looks low but it is about R50 an hour = R400 a day = R2,000 or so a month. Which still look weak which about average monthly salary in South Africa. The country has about 30% unemployment. and the productivity there is pretty abysmal - in Cape town on a Friday the rush hour starts at 1 pm!!!
Cost of living is way below the US and most Asian countries.
and cars are so expensive there because the government whacks an 80% import duty on cars to protect the local industry. without it all the local plants would be uneconomical (like what happened in Oz).
In many ways, mostly economic, south Africa has not moved on from the bad old days. just injected a big does of black plutocrats and middle classes into the equation but the workers sttill exploited and huge numbers of people living on the breadline.
Unfortunately this strike (and those on the mines) won't bring big changes as it is low pay that makes these industries economic in the first place.

Sorry, 2,000 a week

But they pay no tax in Japan, and a pittance to the workers, must be tough being the biggest auto maker in the WORLD. I know it's not easy putting all that cash in several banks.

Toyota might pull out from there. It operates in Mexico where minimum wage is 61 cents an hour. There are various parts companies in Mexico. Then Abe visited Central America recently. The highest minimum wage there are Chilli $2.21, Brazil $2.11. Figure how long it takes the Japan Inc will move from African countries to Central American countries.
