“Many people assume Toyota is just about money,”

And it is!

“Toyota is trying to be reborn as a company that makes ever better cars.”

BS! Toyota is about copying other company's technology or buying them so that they can quickly get into a market that they don't compete in. This company is all about greed and have no ability or know how to create their own innovation.

Examples:

Toyota and Daihatsu (micro car market)

Toyota and Chevrolet (American car market -1980's - Chevy Nova brand name on a Toyota Corolla)

Toyota and Subaru (Boxer engine for the GT86 and possibly other cars)

Toyota and Yamaha (High performance engines, and variable valve timing and lift technology to compete with Honda)

Toyota and Mazda (????)

Toyota and BMW (hydrogen fuel cell cars, leverage in the European car market)

Toyota and Ford (hybrid car market)

Toyota and Tesla (electric car market) -failed partnership

I agree with that. Mazda, Toyo Kogyo, has been ridiculed by the industry and would be customers for decades. But now that the tides are turning Toyota smells an opportunity to expand and absorb a technology they do not possess. Watch out, Mazda!

mergers/buyouts are part of all big business history, there are very few companies that havent done it. Just because you buy out a competitor doesnt automatically mean it will be successful. Toyota has done this while still managing to be the largest and one of the most profitable auto companies. Toyota or any company for that matter dont own the innovative minds that work for them and they do compensate them in the form of salaries. but they do own the products and ideas that they produce in the form of copywrites and patents. Just look at tech companies that use each others patents for there products, Apple Samsung etc. At the end of the day people still need to like and buy your products for you to become successful and grow, Toyota just has done the best job so far.
