Is it in addition to 539,500 that Toyota is recalling faulty Corolla, Matrix cars in US? well, if so it becomes a great liability resulting in huge profit loss.

Looks like the Japanese work ethic is slipping. Toyota had better be careful - they may lose the number 1 slot in the future. Remember, the reason why they are so successful in America is due to their attention to detail. Erase that, and down goes Toyota.

I wouldn't say the Japanese work ethic is slipping, nor would it affect Toyota's image in the U.S. First of all, vehicle recalls happen to all car companies. Unfortunate but that's the nature of the beast as no one is perfect. Second, these affected vehicles are those made and used in Japan, unless somewhere in America they are offering Noah and Voxy minivans which I've never heard of around my parts. Many Toyota vehicles and parts aren't even made or from Japan. I don't see any big negative impact from this news.

To their credit, they issued a recall. In the recent past other companies hid these defects, and people died as a result. I'm all for disclosure.

"I don't see any big negative impact from this news."

Really ? If I do recall, just last October we got this:

From Forbes Auto, October 17th 2007

"It’s been a rough week for Toyota. First, the company gets slapped by Consumer Reports, which said that Toyota’s quality slipped so much that it will no longer recommend every car just because it has a loopy “T” on the hood. CR won’t recommend the V-6 powered Toyota Camry sedan nor the Tundra pickup because their quality results were below average. Overall, Toyota slipped in CR’s latest survey. Its namesake brand now ranks fifth, behind Honda, Acura, Scion and Subaru. The next day, Toyota said it would recall 470,000 cars in Japan."

The article goes on to say:

"these are still really bad signs. Toyota has had some high-profile recalls in the past couple of years. Last year, company President Katsuaki Watanabe bowed in apology and said Toyota would fix the problems. A year later, we’re still seeing big recalls and slipping results in quality surveys. CR is a bible for many consumers. Here’s the rub: Detroit’s Big Three can’t cut costs fast enough or rebuild their brands quickly enough to knock Toyota down a few pegs. But if the Japanese juggernaut keeps moving in reverse on quality, Detroit might be able to find a way back into the hearts of some buyers who were lost so long ago."

I would agree ! As I for one would not be silly enough to purchase any Toyota made product. They have gone the way of SONY. Got too big for their britches and allowed quality to suffer at the expense of sales and profits. I have nothing but condemnation for Toyota as a whole. They work their staff to death, hide defects, lie about quality control numbers, have serious issues with gender bias and race relations, and basically represent everything that is wrong about Japanese run companies. I for one would support a full scale boycott of Toyota over China any day of the week.

Toyota is still #1 in reliability according to the latest Consumer Reports survey, with Honda #2 and VW DEAD LAST if you can believe that.

  • thepossum at 09:32 PM JST - 12th April

Wrong Sarge ! At least according to "todays" report from Consumer reports.

"Toyota continues to build some very impressive vehicles, such as the new Highlander, our top-scoring three- row SUV, and the Lexus LS, which earned the highest score in our current Ratings. But the automaker's reputation for reliability has shown some cracks. For the first time in years, three Toyota-built models had below-average reliability in our survey. They included Toyota's redesigned V6 Camry sedan and four-wheel-drive V8 Tundra pickup, and the Lexus GS with all-wheel drive. Still, the company builds very reliable vehicles overall and ranks third in reliability among auto manufacturers."

Seems some folks still fall for the "If you tell a lie enough, it becomes true" theory of actuality.

  • Sarge at 09:41 PM JST - 12th April

Wrong Possum! At least according to the Consumer Reports report I heard on the radio just the other day:

"...Toyota, despite a few recent reliability setbacks, has the fewest overall problems with its vehicles as they pass the 5 year mark..."

  • thepossum at 09:57 PM JST - 12th April

    Wrong Sarge !

Check out "Todays" Yahoo front page ! This is "the" most recent Consumer Reports and my quoted post comes directly off that article.

  • Sarge at 10:50 PM JST - 12th April

Possum - OK, I guess we'll just leave the reliability question up to the consumers who buy cars. And this year's top seller of cars is - get ready - Toyota!

  • thepossum at 11:11 PM JST - 12th April

Nice comeback Sarge, I take it you concede the point.

And let's not forget what Automobile company has been number one for more than 70 years, GM ! Toyota winning one quarter in 70 years is hardly anything to crow about. Especially in light of their corporate culture and ongoing problems with quality control ! You sound like a sports fan celebrating a first quarter lead ! Lemme guess, you got suckered into the hype and own a Toyota ?

  • thepossum at 11:15 PM JST - 12th April

Oh and Sarge, for future reference...

"General Motors is the best selling auto maker in China. The Buick brand is especially strong, led by the Buick Excelle subcompact. Cadillac initiated sales in China in 2004, starting with imports from the United States. GM pushed the marketing of the Chevrolet brand in China in 2005 as well, moving the former Buick Sail to that marque."

Toyota, with all that historical baggage... aint gonna have a chance !

  • thepossum at 11:32 PM JST - 12th April

Oh, and for any of you wondering about what Toyota owners "really" think... go to "consumeraffairs.com" and look up the long list of complaints about Toyota engines ! Truly shocking stuff and horrible behaviour by Toyota execs who just strand consumers with the typical Japanese response... "shoganai !"

  • Sarge at 07:10 AM JST - 13th April

Possum - Let's not forget what company has been losing tons of money and market share the past several years - GM! And let's not forget what company has been making tons of money and gaining market share - Toyota! And let's not forget which company's cars has the fewest problems as they hit the 5 year mark - Toyota!

  • thepossum at 10:27 AM JST - 13th April

Sarge, and lets not forget which company is in this Japantoday article swallowing another 630,000 recalls... Yep Toyota !!!
