The word today on manufacturing net is that March car sales were off by as much as 45%. All the major players were down, lead by GM. People can cheer all they want but consumer spending is down and layoffs are up. Things aren't going to get better in the short term. Unless you are a banker...

Nothing but crocodile tears from the higher ups at Toyota. They know full well why American companies like GM are in trouble. Unfair business practices and unfettered market access to American consumers have slowly eaten away at one of Americas greatest companies, and it's been led by Toyota. I asked my business class this morning what they think about a company that openly polluted Japanese waterways for years before finally getting caught and fined by the government. The response, "close them down !" I then asked what they thought about companies employing slave shop working conditions that lead to death from overwork. The response, again, "shut them down" ! I then asked them what they thought about a company that led it's industry in recalls and faulty product distribution, the response, an overwhelming "shut them down, close them immediately !" I then asked them how would they feel if an American company came into Japan with an exchange rate advantage of 30-50 yen on the dollar, dumped products, broke corporate regulations on sexual harrasment, and introduced a work style designed to alter the Japanese way of life (for example asking them to work even longer hours at lower pay etc), the burning question from them was; Who is this company ? I answered, "Toyota" !

As concerns grew about the environment and the political cost of foreign oil, GM responded with the Hummer. GM had a hand in their own demise. Besides, why isn't Ford on the brink as well?
