Toyota to offer study-abroad program for job-offer recipients

TOYOTA CITY —

Toyota Motor Corp plans to offer a study-abroad program in 2012 for selected recipients of job offers in Japan. Toyota said its new program seeks to develop a more globally literate workforce by providing new graduates the opportunity to study abroad before they become employees.

The program is aimed to help participants develop a broad network with university students outside Japan and to learn more about the role expected of them within the international community, Toyota said.

The automaker plans to send as many as 10 people from among the job-offer recipients for 2011 to study in the international student program at the University of Pennsylvania from April to September 2012.

Applications for the program will be accepted from a select group of job-offer recipients this month and, if more apply than can be accepted, applicants will be screened based on a short essay and language test. Program participants will be treated as officially entering Toyota on Oct 1, 2012, and are to assume their respective postings on Dec 1.

Toyota will cover costs for tuition and a round-trip airfare, while participants will be responsible for living expenses while on the program.

Good on Toyota. The only way for Japan to prosper in the 21st century, as opposed to stagnate like it has for the past two decades, is to have truly global-thinking companies, not simply Japanese ones doing business in other countries. And this is recognizing that. Hat's off to Toyota. Hope more companies follow suit.

A company I'm familiar with does something similar for employees of at least one year. Company pays their salary but the worker can study abroad for six months; usually languages but they could study any business-related subject if accepted by the school.

Toyota is big enough to send a couple of hundred people out into the world. Spread them around in the UK, Canada, Australia and the US.

Tokyo, Toyota already does this with many of their staff. Depending on the dept they are in, they go away from a year to three years. I can't think of too many American companies and the like that do this. Credit where it is do.

JapanGal, do you know of any other companies that do this?? A whole 10 is better than nothing.
