It would probably be wiser for Toyota to reduce the number of full-time workers. Too big to fail! We may find out in 2009

This is exactly why I hate unions. Asking for a pay raise when thousands are out of work? Greedy and shows that unions just don't have a clue.

Toyota hasn't given its workers a pay raise in 8 years ! Why start now ? Some of us are still wondering the obvious... what happened to the billions in profit this company raked in the last 10-15 years ??? I mean the global economic crisis is in its infancy, and the US actually saw its economy grow last month ! What is Toyota doing ... besides being greedy !

Where are you getting data that the US economy grew last month. All of the indicies I've been checking say that everything is down. Try checking www.economist.com and see what that says.
The only possible good news in this is that, in Japan, the bosses probably won't get pay raises either. The managers in Japan have never suffered from the hubris that their peers in the US have. It's a nice change.

However Japans exports have shrunk over 45% from January 2008. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601068&sid=aLFHweAZae38&refer=economy
Some speculate that the Nikkei will slump below 6000 points before it gets better.
