Well, if dealerships start finacing at reasonable rate then perhaps people will start buying. Charging 6-8% interest when the bank rate is near 0 is just ridiculous!

High interest rates tend to reflect a consumer's poor creditworthiness (ie, greater risks to the lender). But the best reason I can think of for not buying a car in this country is the shaken inspection system, which penalizes ownership after the age of 10 years, and bleeds owners of money by requiring their cars to undergo useless safety inspections. I've seen stats that fewer than 0.2% of traffic accidents were caused by poorly maintained or defective vehicles.

which penalizes ownership after the age of 10 years

How does it do that? Age of the car doesn't affect the fees.

You mean overseas? 'Cos if you mean in Japan, wouldn't that suggest that the shaken system works pretty well by keeping defective vehicles off the roads?

    Spudman:

After ten years, the shaken is not every 2 years, but annually.

I do not think it is annually any more guys. My Ex has the car now and good ridance, but I believe they changed that years ago.

These concept cars look like the same cars I saw at the '64 World's Fair in NY City.

electric2004: No, the shaken is not annually after 10 years. I know because my car is older than 10 years and I go every 2 years.

Because of the shaken system, used cars in Japan are almost always in good nick. And because they aren't the latest fad, they are much cheaper than used cars in other countries. I never pay more than 200,000 yen for a good used car here, so why borrow money to buy a new one that loses its value the minute you drive it out of the showroom?

Foxie! You are right! Toyota cars are way too expensive!!

Gifu: me too, never buy a new car and I drive them till they drop dead. Last car with two year dealer warranty cost 1,000,000 yen and it went for 14 years with the only mechanicals regular brakes oil filters and wipers. Total cost aside from compulsory taxes, 6,000 yen a month. Love my Nissan car, hate the rust that killed it.

I gave my car an anti-rusting coat, spudman. You should do that with your next car, it costs about 20,000 Yen but well worth it. I want to keep my car forever, so I take extra good care of it. I drove with it from Wakkanai to Kagoshima and back. Priceless memories and I never had any troubles with it, not even a recall. I say to myself, if cars from the 50's are still running, mine can too. Gotta add that I have a real good mechanic friend who has a little workshop and understands my feelings.

That regulation was changed many years ago. The JCI (shaken) works very well, IMHO.
