No it is not - it is completely predictable. (I stated as much in a post about Japanese media earlier this week.) Japanese media just reports what J-Inc. spoon feeds them.

Takata spokesman Alby Berman on Thursday confirmed that the company has received a general subpoena from a federal grand jury in New York.

That means sworn testimony with the penalty of perjury. Takata won't be able to hide behind statements issued from Japan much longer. Hope they have the good sense to hire a top-notch U.S. criminal defense attorney.

The full Commerce Committee has scheduled a hearing for Nov. 20 in Washington that likely will feature company representatives and officials from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the government’s auto safety agency.

Bet we won't see too many Japanese executives testifying. They'll send the U.S. folks to slaughter.

It becomes apparent that Japanese press constantly fails to live up the role of the fourth estate

In America, if a major publicly traded company, whether it’s JP Morgan or GM, if it’s practices that violate the laws or put consumers safety in jeopardy, the responsible US senate panels would grill the heads of the company to find the answers.

Right now, Commerce Committee wants to find out if Takata has deliberately withheld its faulty airbag testing data from the public. If it did so, laws and fines will be applied.

One day, I hope that Japanese legislative bodies to do the same, questioning the big hams of Tepco for its Fukushima’s wrongdoing and making the company to pay for its crimes.

GOD! I wish these Legislative Branch politicians would stop trying to do the work of the Judicial Branch. All it results in is a waste of time and taxpayer money. Of course, by doing this they don't have to do any of the work they're SUPPOSED to be doing - like working out bi-partisan agreements on pending legislation.

Ford and Firestone had a major cover-up scandal years ago, GM had a fire-prone ignition switch cover-up scandal, and now, actually they are going through the same thing AGAIN with ignition switches... so to answer your question, it's neither cultural nor coincidence, it's common among large corporations.

But there was conflict of interest with Toyota investigation at the time of the investigation, U.S. goverment owned majority of GM. The goverment should've set-up independent investigaton on Toyota. How can you have fair investigation when you are a competitor of Toyota?
