Well what do you expect from a company that is not used to recalling products? In Japan a recall only takes place after years of coverups are disclosed to the public and a few senior managers bow to the floor.

Don't worry, there are still apologists ready to excuse anything Toyota does - even outside Japan.

Toyota might be waiting until specific complaints emerge before including a particular model in the recall, then the list of affected models could continue to grow for some time.

The company is probably working on a solution to the problem that goes beyond a simple floormat redesign. They are exploring possible solutions that would allow the driver to easily overcome any problem that caused unintended acceleration. If Toyota can develop a software so that if the gas pedal and brake pedal were hit at the same time, the brake pedal wins. A software change would have the additional advantage of being possibly inexpensive and quick for dealers to perform.
