Yamaha wins copyright suit in China

HAMAMATSU —

Yamaha Corp said Friday it has won a copyright infringement suit over accompaniment style data used in its electronic musical instruments.

In the lawsuit against Chinese electronic musical instrument maker Deli Electronics (Shenzhen) Co and three other companies, launched at the Beijing Second Intermediate People’s Court in November 2006, Yamaha claimed that the four companies made unauthorized copies of its 425 style data for use in their products. Accompaniment style data are used to help instrument learners play music.

The Chinese district court recognized Yamaha’s copyright to 26 of the style data last December, and Yamaha reached a settlement with the defendants over the rest of the style data on April 29, the company said.

In the settlement, the four companies recognized Yamaha’s copyright and agreed not to sell products incorporating its style data and to pay 110,000 yuan in compensation.
