Yoshinoya forecasts strong earnings growth

TOKYO —

Restaurant chain Yoshinoya Holdings Co on Tuesday projected strong earnings growth for the business year to next February due partly to the recent revival of around-the-clock sales of its “gyudon” beef-on-rice dishes.

The top gyudon restaurant chain expects its net profit to jump 13.4-fold from the previous year to 2.5 billion yen and operating profit to rise 14.1% to 7.1 billion yen, on sales of 174.5 billion yen, up 12%.

The company plans to open 80 new outlets of its flagship Yoshinoya gyudon chain and 50 new “Hanamaru Udon” noodle restaurants, a chain that it acquired in 2006.

The new store openings are expected to contribute to bumper earnings, Yoshinoya said.

I never understood the appeal of this place. I've eaten some in southern California, and the meat they use is very gristly and fatty. Not high quality at all.

The ones in so cal and Japan use very different quality of meats. Although, the ones in Japan do use a lower quality of beef than say, Ishigaki beef, it is still much better than California's Yoshinoya's.

I ate in one just the other day in Shinjuku. The reason ? I wanted to eat at Sukiya, but they closed the upstairs seating area and forced customers to line up 4-5 deep !!! After a bit of a shout out to the manager about taking customers for granted, I walked across the street and took my business to Yoshinoya. They gladly seated, fed, and took my money ! I'll not be back to Sukiya in Shinjuku anytime soon... poor service !
