Going to Japan was a must. With former senator Mitchell in the middle East, and the VP in Europe, The Sec. of State had no choice but to go to Japan / Asia.

    Ciao

Tough demands, like "Do something other than fingerprint foreigners"?

    Soldave,

Tough demands, like "Do something other than fingerprint foreigners"?

So you haven't traveled to the US then?? They were the FIRST to fingerprint foreigners and now even people from countries having visa waiver agreements must get approval before travel.

Getting in an out of Japan is a doddle by comparison.

Exactly - Japan is simply doing what many other industrialized countries (led by the US) have been doing for quite some time.

Japan should be fingerprinting its own citizens to prevent terrorism. It has never experienced an outside attack like the US and Europe. I'm sure suicide bombers are just lining up to enter legally, though, so Immigration should have nothing to worry about.

Yes, I went back in 2000 and didn't have any fingerprints taken. Although that was before 11th September, seems to be the day terrorism started in the world according to some.

Soldave, So you are a US citizen then? Then you wouldn't be fingerprinted visiting the US.

For the rest of the world, anyone visiting the US is treated like a terrorist suspect even before they leave their own home.

Lizz, And some of the reason why Japan has not had a terrorist attack yet may just be because the percentage of foreigners is so much lower. I live in Japan, been here a long time and I would be happy for the tight restrictions on entry to remain so at least the riff raff are kept out.

Went to, and returned from Japan last year. Did not get fingerprinted going either direction.

well I took soldave's remark is to do more than just finger printing and not that the fingerprinting was some sort of big deal, but something trivial and that Japan needs to step up its participation to take a more active aproach in helping project power as a US allie in the region.

Moderator: Readers, back on topic please. Fingerprinting is not relevant to this discussion.
