Oil supply 3/5 of our energy needs and we have 63 nuclear reactors that supply 1/3 of our needs of elecricity. That means that we need 3 times the current number of nuclear reactors for lower our dependence from imported oil.
Japan has had several nuclear accidents / shutdowns, some from earthquakes and at least from human error (carrying nuclear waste in a metal bucket you buy from a home center).
Nuclear power and Japan do not belong together in the same sentence. Not least because of hidden fault lines and miscalculations during the design stages, and massive earthquake damage both in the past and very likely in the future too.
I am sorry to hear that it has become "attractive" under temporary artificial political pressure to cut emissions.
Yes, after long considerations and many cold showers from solar panels and having visited numerous nuclear power stations, I came to the conclusion that nuclear power is the best until someone can come up with a new energy at the same price that works.
@Badsey.Actually the level is 389ppm. A safe target is 350ppm. Biggest safety problem with nuclear power stations in Japan is the bribery of inspectors by companies who do not want to pay for expensive maintenance and upgrading.I fear that similar problems will come into play in China.

Safety is always going to be an issue here.

Emission goals, will differ for nations. USA/Japan wants emission goals because they are developed now, from emissions of past.
Developed nations need to spend time/money,so that developing nations, get it right, whatever way it takes, be it nuclear or other clean energy ways.

let's build more nuclear power stations close to fault lines!

I hope it is always an issue wherever they use nuclear power (just not in the way you meant).

Al Gore will be so happy! -Nuclear Energy --> Who would have thunk it?

Note: There is not enough CO2 as it is (338ppm). How do you expect plants to grow and people to be fed with such low CO2 levels?
I say we should be shooting for a 1000ppm CO2 level and hope the sun burns a little brighter. Grapes in England again!

Wasn't there a report of some leak at a plant today?

You are joking, aren't you Badsey?
