    What a major diss.

Japan can't do much as America's protectorate.

But the islands have suffered neglect and the population has plummeted since the fall of the Soviet Union.

This is the opposite of what was in reports yesterday.

You know, I suppose another opinion about all this is that it might show that Russia secretly wants a deal, but they want 10 times more than it is worth. How do you go about getting that? Well, if you use this formula

value of islands = gain from resources + national pride + peace treaty + no more pains in the neck from Russian plutocrats

then you can see that the Russians being a major pain actually adds value to the islands.

The Russians don't really want the islands. Stupid rocks way as far away from Moscow as you can get. But if you want to deal them away, why not get as much as you can for them?

Putin: Dimitri, the Japanese are fighting with the Chinese, go to Kunashir.

Medvedev: What? Again? I hate that place. Send somebody else.

Putin: No. It has to be you. Kan will blow his top. Besides, I need to break in the new mayor of Moscow.

Medvedev: You promised you would make ME mayor of Moscow and now you ask me to do this. You know... one of these days....

Putin: (strokes his cat)... one of these days, WHAT, my dear Dmitri?

    Medvedev: ....

Putin: That's what I thought. Now you are going to Kunashir and you are going to like it, or I will put a special mint on your pillow in some future hotel room.

Japan protested the visit considering the presence of the US bases here, otherwise Japan would never dare to protest Russia having the present capacity.

Tongue in cheek: Just take the islands and claim the Sakhalin peninsula as well. Historically they both could be under Japanese dominion. In the end give back the sakhalin peninsula and all would be happy. Better, negotiate the use of the resourses and let freedom reign for the people of both countries. A free zone.

Japan is getting bullied, and there is not a thing it can/will do...

How long until the Korean right again makes claims on the 'disputed' island between Japan & Korea...

Given Japan's impotence on this issue, I will expect China to push harder to intimidate Japan regarding the Senkaku's.

Life as a declining power... ain't life grand!

"Prime Minister Vladamir Putin, who still retains more clout"

Not only that, the man still looks great shirtless, ha ha!

"Medvedev vowed to improve infrastructure on the islands and raise their standard of living to one commensurate with the rest of Russia."

    Then it would still suck.

You all here forget to remember your history lessons, when Russian thought the USA was really crazy for paying a million $$$$ for ALASKA, the Russians back then laughed and thought they had taken America for fools, then the USA found first GOLD then lots of BLACK GOLD, a.k.a. OIL, so I think now the Russians first want to let Japan know they will not be pushed around like back in 1905 and if the Japanese want these islands back, my guess it will be a lot more than 1 million clams.

“You are going to dictate to us how to behave in our own country, are you? We’ll show you,”

Yeah, go ahead, give us some more of your acrimony and your boorish diplomacy.

Natives of Sakhalin would be the happiest if Japan took control of the island.Moscow does not allocate a budget for the island.

This proves one important fact about Japanese history in 1945, despite it being a very sore subject for Japanese people. That it was a true blessing for Japan that the Americans decided to keep a presence and administer Japan after their surrender. Here is the alternative people. The Russians would have continued the Pacific War and ended up turning Japan into another North Korea or Vietnam. There would have been no economical miracle, no domination of the global automobile or manufacturing industries, no 2nd largest economy in the world. Just a poverty-stricken bleak landscape run by ex-KGB puppets like Medvedev (actually Putin, who pulls Medvedev's strings).

Medvedev has at times been upstaged by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who still retains more clout.

Yeah, right. Medveddev is a puppet of Putin who used to be a head of KGB in former USSR. Putin is a wolf in sheep skin. Therefore, Japan needs to play tough in negotiating with Medvedev on this issue.

It is sad that the Russians are so insecure. They just have to do one better. There course of action is driving Japan away from a political solution. The population of Russians is going down too, soon there will be more Chinese in Siberia than ethic Russians. Japan and Russia could be the best of friends but old grudges will prevent this from happening. Anyhow Russia is more worried about appearing tough than extending friendship.

Russia's economy is on a roll, doubling in size since 1992. It seems a more confident Moscow is now positioned to bring the islands into the fold with development and investment. As Japan is in decline, and Russia on the rise, Japanese investment no longer looks so important.

Someone who has never studied World Economics in 2010.

Development and investment ?? A puppet for a politicial leader arrives on a media show and gets pictured with a family who get heaps of food piled on their table for the press.

Japan fighting with all its neighboyurs over islands. I agree that if US hadn't stepped in and occupied and then backed the yaks to put down the leftist parties in Japan, this place would be either a province of Russia or divided like korea.
