I hope all the people who say this is easy are never allowed to work for US security. No, it is hard and they should do better.

Clinton appointee Jamie Gorelick is the person most responsible for 9-11. Whatever the US is doin these days can only be improvement compared to those days.

Dispense with political correctness and allow people in responsible positions in the government to do their job without fear of repercussions concerning racism and religious discrimination and the U.S. will do a better job keeping the country safe from terrorist attacks.

But since this is not possible, we'll just continue to muddle along and damn the consequences.

This case was a classic bit of incompetence. Yes, there are lots of names of people suspected of being involved with terrorism, but this guys was known and when he filled out his ESTA application, his name should have pinged on the system.

Arabic names can be tricky, because there are multiple ways to spell the name, but the latest security systems, look for alternative spellings of certain names.

The U.S. government had his name for at least 48 hours before he boarded that plane, so allowing him on showed real weaknesses in the organisation.

It's not a matter of it being easy. It's a matter of how complicated the U.S. security and intelligence agencies make it. We have too many agencies involved in "counter-terrorism" (we have too many security and intelligence agencies period). There is no way to make apologies or excuses for what almost happened on Christmas Day. They had everything they needed on this guy, including his name, and they still screwed it up.

As I posted to the related article, we need two security and intelligence agencies in the U.S. - one domestic, one international, they have the same boss and they use the same computer system and data base. If you think this is an over-simplification, take a look at how just the DHS is "structured" understanding that the ATF (there's a useful agency!), FBI, CIA and NSA are outside it's sphere of control.
