I apologize, I should have clarified a bit better. What I meant to say was, whenever Japanese citizens protest or act like undisciplined thugs towards the Japanese government or any of the Japanese insitutions or organizations such as the police here, the naysayers here are full of congratulatory praise for these citizens. In these cases they are upstanding and noble, and more Japanese should be like them.
But, if any Japanese citizen (or Korean or anyone else for that matter) engages in the same mindless behavior towards a non Japanese institution or cause, then the same naysayers then condemn these Japanese citizens as mindless and ignorant xenophobes (beef issue anyone).
Yeah, I don't care what's this is about, but I support these people. More than anything, it's good to finally see Japanese protest against someting again.
Amazes me how so many 'insightful posts' are obviously made without any knowledge whatsoever of Japan. The Japanese have, as every other nation, a history of protest and civil-disobedience. Read up folks; stop embarrassing yourselves with this total lack of historical knowledge.
I see the trolls' tails are up. Predictable. As for asking, 'Where's (are) the facts', that just compounds your established lack of insight; the information age, access to a computer --that is 'online'-- and you have to ask that? Go figure... no, no, on second thoughts, for the sake of your neurons, don’t. Or... do?
Star Trek fan, I wouldn't include NiceGaijin in your call to arms, their post was qualified by the use of 'again', hence establishing a knowledge of previous protest ecetera. Do you see?
people people people, the cops knew they were coming they had 100riot dudes there to defend their turf, reason they knew they were coming is they knew they did this old fella wrong by beating on him.
Like others I say good on the protestors for kicking some butt here otherwise the cops are just going to keeping walking all over them, I am not big on violence but I am also not big on what the cops do here & get away with, the cops & their system need to collective kick in the nads, what they have been getting awaywith is down right criminal.
I believe this man, i accept that it is likely the police dismissed his claims without justification and his status had a lot to do with it. I don't think they will be so dismissive in the future or at least they will now think more about it.
Not big on violence yet approve of these thugs? Funny how these caveats work in these situations. Destroying property sends a message to the police? Oh really, then I assume the same people here approving of this behavior at the Osaka police station would also approve of what happened during the L.A. riots when the citizens burned down the city and killed people because of police brutality. A breakdown in civility is hardly reason to support any person and their cause, I don't care if it's Japan or the U.S.
pls read a little more carefully dude, the cops deployed 100riot police, THATS why things got outta hand, the police cant/wont take a little demo!
But they bloody well need to realise they cant just walk all over people & continue to get away with it, perhaps you wud prefer if we all just bend over like you & take it again & again, no thx
I am not in support for any violence, but one should understand that the situation in Japan is very different from most other developped countries. It is very difficult in Japan to organize a demonstration / protest. Authorizations are very difficult to obtain and very restrictive. Mass demonstrations and semi-spontaneous protests are not tolerated here.
Any group of more than 50 people will be surrounded and fighted by anti-riot police until dislocation. The presence of riot forces is probably a reason why violence started up, because people got angry at the seemingly indifference of the police to their revendications.
Nishi-Nari is one of those places that doesn't make it into the tourist books about Japan. It is what people in other countries would call a slum. This is just the most recent chapter in a very long history.

Where's the facts YangYong, why I've learned here that Japanese have never protested or spoke out on anything, the "sheep" they are.

Maybe the police could produce their interrogation video tape, to show that they didn't punch him....
